Mission Repair

“If you want to build a great city,” the late senator and Harvard professor Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, “build a great university and wait 200 years.” Moynihan’s quip captures the intricate and essential relationship between colleges and the communities they serve. Colleges are employers, factories of research that improve (and save) lives, pathways to personal fulfillment and financial independence, and centers of artistic and cultural excellence. The mission of higher education is stitched into the fabric of the nation. Reminding the country — and especially its political leaders — of that fact is the most urgent mission of all.
