The Chronicle’s Leadership Transformation Collaborative

While professional development programs often equip us with fresh ideas and approaches that inspire us, the real challenge lies in integrating them into our daily lives.

The Chronicle is partnering with Strategic Imagination to provide you with a professional development program which recognizes that navigating today’s complex higher-ed landscape isn’t simply about learning new concepts. We’ve created a new kind of virtual community that will walk alongside you through the spring semester, with brief lessons and exercises designed to be integrated into your busy schedules and applied to your current challenges.

Each element of our Leadership Transformation Collaborative is designed to provide you with practical tools and a supportive environment to enhance your leadership skills and address the challenges you face daily. We’ll bring fresh insights and useful resources that will help participants cultivate reflective habits and new mindsets to keep building upon over the course of the semester and integrate into their everyday leadership practice moving forward.

Key Learning Tool | Four Practice Areas
Our program will center itself around growth in four practice areas. These areas include:
  • Balancing Competing Priorities for Time and Energy
  • Developing the Art of Conflict Foresight
  • Navigating and Working Across Silos
  • Leading and Empowering Others in Times of Uncertainty

For each area, we’ve outlined the journey that leaders have told us they hope the Leadership Collaborative will help them navigate. Our program is uniquely designed to meet participants in any stage of the journey they might find themselves, and provide the tools and support to make meaningful progress in the fall semester and beyond.

Find more details on your journey through the four practice areas in this free excerpt of our Leadership Transformation Self-Assessment.
Key Learning Tool | Self-Coaching
Structured Self-Coaching Exercises and Tools:
Most of us don’t have budgets for personal coaches, and we’ve created empowering modules to provide opportunities for “self-coaching” to overcome common barriers to change. We’ll have new exercises for you to experiment with biweekly, while also encouraging you to pace your engagement with each exercise according to your own needs.

Asynchronous Engagement:
While we have a timeline, this program is designed with flexibility in mind. Our materials are designed to be consumed asynchronously and are available in various formats to suit different learning needs and styles. We will have kick-off and closing sessions, which will be recorded for those who cannot attend. Additionally, we have baked in “catch-up” time, knowing attendees will find themselves busiest at different times.
Key Learning Tool | Peer Connection
Collaborative Learning Hub:
While rewarding, the leadership journey can be lonely. Our program will offer participants a private and supportive Slack Workspace in which they can give and receive feedback, discuss reflections and action plans, troubleshoot problems, and, most importantly, celebrate wins.

Alumni Community:
Our community will provide a space for peer support and networking opportunities to share experiences and best practices beyond the duration of this program. The community is designed to help you gain momentum and continue your leadership journey.

(Optional) Co-Learning Circles:
For those looking for deeper connections, we offer the option to join a small 6-8 person group. These groups have access to a private online discussion space and commit to 30-minute weekly sessions to troubleshoot challenges, share lessons learned, and build community. Sessions will alternate between “spotlight sessions” (one member discussing a challenge they’re facing and receiving ideas from peers), and “round-robin conversations” around a question, article, or exercise.
Key Learning Tool | Action-Planning Frameworks
Tools and Resources for Sustained Impact:
Mastering leadership and professional development skills is a lifelong journey. This program aims to introduce you to frameworks, tools, and ways of thinking that you can continue to build throughout the program and well beyond its conclusion. We will emphasize action planning to ensure you continue integrating these insights into your daily work, and we’ll recommend resources for further investigation. Our multifaceted framework approach will help you enhance your leadership capabilities, improve decision-making, and foster a proactive growth mindset.

Our program will include the following tools and more:
  • Self-Assessment: Identifying Your Hidden Saboteurs to Saying “No,” Holding Boundaries, and Strategically Using Time
  • Prioritization Guide: Are You Making Space and Time for What Matters?
  • Prioritization Worksheet: Strategies for Overcoming Cross-Silo Challenges
  • Checklist: Building a Culture of Collaborative Problem-Solving
