Thomas Parham,vice chancellor for student affairs at the University of California at Irvine, will become president of California State University-Dominguez Hills in late June. He will succeed Willie Hagan, who plans to retire from the university at the end of this academic year.
Lisa Skari,vice president for institutional advancement at Highline College, will become president of Mt. Hood Community College on July 23. She will succeed Debra Derr, who plans to retire on June 30.

Departures
John Ronald (Ron) Langrell III,president of Bates Technical College since 2012, was fired by the college’s Board of Trustees in March “for convenience” rather than “for cause.” Langrell had been on paid leave since late January, following an investigation prompted by an employee-harassment complaint.
H. Fred Walker,president of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania since 2016, stepped down on March 30. Faculty members called for a change following coverage of his leadership in The Chronicle.

Deaths
George H. Emert,president of Utah State University from 1992 until his retirement in 2000, died on March 21. He was 79.
Augie Garrido,a baseball coach at the University of Texas at Austin from 1997 until 2016, died on March 15. He was 79. In his career, he won five national championships: two for Texas and three for California State University at Fullerton, and he is believed to have cumulatively racked up more wins than any other college baseball coach in history.
Mel Gordon,a drama scholar who taught at New York University and the University of California at Berkeley, died on March 22 of complications from renal failure. He was 71.
Arnold R. Hirsch,a professor of history at the University of New Orleans until his retirement in 2010, died on March 19. He was 69. He is known for his groundbreaking book Making the Second Ghetto: Race and Housing in Chicago, 1940-1960 (Cambridge University Press, 1983).

Irving Shain,a chemistry professor and later chancellor of the University of Wisconsin at Madison from 1977 until 1986, died on March 6. He was 92.
Charles Yanofsky,a professor of biology emeritus at Stanford University, died on March 16. He was 92. His early research in genetics proved that the linear sequence of amino acids in a protein match the linear sequence of chemicals in DNA. In 2003 he was awarded the National Medal of Science.
