A Texas legislator who was portrayed in a student-newspaper cartoon as a small, black, yapping dog, took to the House floor last week to decry racism on college campuses.
Rep. Ron Wilson, a Houston Democrat, criticized Texas A&M University’s paper, The Battalion, for running the cartoon, which portrayed him as a dog snapping at an A&M Corps of Cadets boot. The caption read, “State Rep. Ron Wilson throws his weight around at Texas A&M.”
The cartoon was published after Mr. Wilson panned the university’s handling of a fraternity “jungle” party, in which pledges wore blackface and grass skirts and were chased by fraternity members dressed as hunters. The fraternity was suspended and fined but not closed, as Mr. Wilson had urged.
