A preacher known informally as “Brother Jim” lost the latest round of a series of legal battles with colleges last week when a federal judge in Louisville, Ky., issued a preliminary ruling in a lawsuit pitting the fire-and-brimstone evangelist against Murray State University.
The preacher, James G. Gilles, has challenged speaking restrictions on dozens of college campuses. He sued Murray State, in Kentucky, last year, alleging that its campus speech policy violated his free-speech rights.
Although the lawsuit is still pending, Judge Thomas B. Russell of U.S. District Court in Louisville concluded in a preliminary ruling that the university’s rule requiring all speakers to obtain on-campus sponsorship is legal and does not place an undue burden on Mr. Gilles.
