In a demonstration rare for its kind in China, hundreds and perhaps thousands of students gathered on Tuesday at the gates of Hefei University of Technology and at government offices in Hefei, the capital of Anhui province, located several hundred miles west of Shanghai, to protest unsafe traffic conditions in front of the university. A traffic accident there a day earlier killed two students.
It is unclear exactly how many students participated in the protests. Students who were reached by telephone said that the protesters marched in front of the university, blocked traffic, and shouted slogans for several hours. The students said that some of their classmates were then sent as representatives to the local government offices, where they demanded safety improvements on the stretch of road in front of the university.
