After a plaque honoring Garrison Keillor on the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus was removed, the former radio host and writer said on Monday that he had been “embarrassed” by his place on the Scholars Walk anyway.
“It’s odd to be punished by having something taken away that you never wanted in the first place,” Keillor wrote in a letter to the editor of the Minnesota Daily, the campus newspaper. “I’m a writer, not a scholar, and writers don’t need plaques.”
The Scholars Walk honors outstanding University of Minnesota faculty members and alumni. Keillor’s plaque, which included lyrics from the show he hosted on Minnesota Public Radio, was removed on January 19.
