Deaths
Myron A. Marty,a professor emeritus and former dean of arts and sciences at Drake University, died on July 16. He was 87.
Toni Morrison,author and professor emerita in the humanities at Princeton University, died on August 5. She was 88. Morrison was the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 and received the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved (Plume, 1987). She taught at Princeton from 1989 until 2006, and she also served as chair of humanities.

Julius Scott,president emeritus of Paine College, died on August 1. Scott served as president of the college twice, first from 1975 to 1982 and then from 1988 to 1994. He also served as president of Wiley College and as interim president at Albany State University, the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, and Philander Smith College.
Richard P. Van Duyne,a professor of chemistry and biomedical engineering at Northwestern University, died on July 28. He was 73. Van Duyne is credited with the discovery of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, a technique for detecting and identifying single molecules, in 1977. He arrived at Northwestern as an assistant professor in 1971 and became a full professor in 1979.
Peter Westergaard,a professor emeritus of music at Princeton University and composer of chamber music, opera, and orchestral works, died on June 26. He was 88.
