The American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Foundation have named the recipients of their annual awards recognizing contributions to the field. The awards were presented on Friday at a ceremony during the association’s annual meeting, in Washington.
The awards and recipients are as follows:
Awards for Life Achievement in Psychology
- Public interest: James J. Gallagher, a senior scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
- Science: Howard Leventhal, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University at New Brunswick.
- Application: Jerome M. Sattler, a professor emeritus of psychology at San Diego State University.
- Practice: A. Eugene Shapiro, a professor emeritus of psychology at Nova Southeastern University.
Award for Distinguished Teaching of Psychology
- Thomas E. Ludwig, a professor of psychology at Hope College.
Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contributions
- Charles G. Gross, a professor of psychology at Princeton University.
- Douglas L. Medin, a professor of psychology at Northwestern University.
- Robert S. Siegler, a professor of cognitive psychology at Carnegie Mellon University.
Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology
- Karen A. Matthews, a professor of psychiatry and epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Distinguished Scientific Awards for Early Career Contributions to Psychology
- Social psychology: Albert Jan (Ap) Dijksterhuis, a professor of social psychology at the University of Amsterdam.
- Perception and motor performance: Günther Knoblich, an associate professor of psychology at Rutgers University at Newark, N.J.
- Individual differences: Robert F. Krueger, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
- Applied psychology: Hendree E. Jones, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University.
- Applied psychology: Frederick P. Morgeson, an associate professor of management at Michigan State University.
- Behavioral and cognitive neuroscience: Russell A. Poldrack, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles.

- Renée E. DeRouin, a Ph.D. candidate in psychology at the University of Central Florida.

- Senior career: Margaret Beale Spencer, a professor of education and psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.
- Early career: Daniel Dodgen, the emergency-management coordinator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a unit of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
