Chief executives
Appointments
Ernest Baptiste, chief executive of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, will become chief executive of Stony Brook University Hospital on November 27. That post is now filled by L. Reuven Pasternak, who is also vice president for health systems at Stony Brook and who will retain his vice presidential role.
Lisa C. Freeman, executive vice president and provost at Northern Illinois University, became acting president there in July. She stepped in for Doug Baker, who resigned in June after a state investigation concluded that he had mismanaged spending.
Jerry L. Hardee, former special assistant to the president at Life University and former president of Sherman College of Chiropractic, became president of Paine College in June.
Steven E. Johnson, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the Texas Association of Community Colleges, became chancellor of Western Governors University Texas in September. He succeeds Veronica Vargas Stidvent, who stepped down to concentrate on being a public-policy consultant.
Matt Lucas, provost and executive vice president at Corban University, became chancellor of Indiana Wesleyan University’s National and Global Campus in October. He succeeds Audrey Hahn, who was planning to retire by the end of the year.

Laura Monks, interim president at Tennessee College of Applied Technology at Shelbyville, became permanent president on November 1. Previously, she served as assistant director for the college’s programs and operations.
Steven P. O’Day, vice president for strategic initiatives and secretary of Lebanon Valley College, became president of Austin College on October 30. Michael Imhoff had served as interim president.
Matt Rodgers, principal at Enterprise High School, in Alabama, became president of Enterprise State Community College, on September 1. The university had been without a full-time president for three years.
Resignations
Livingston Alexander, president of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and Titusville since 2003, will step down from the post on June 30, 2018.

Amanda Lee, president of Cape Fear Community College since 2015, will resign, effective December 31. The college’s executive vice president, James P. Morton, will serve as interim president.
William Mann, president of Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota since 2008, will step down from his post in May 2018.
Retirements
Joe Robertson, president of Oregon Health & Science University since 2006, officially retired on October 31, but he offered to continue leading the institution while drawing retirement benefits during the search for a successor. The university’s Board of Directors appointed him to serve until the end of the academic year. In September, Dr. Robertson disclosed that he had been diagnosed with a mild form of multiple sclerosis.

Larry E. Davis, dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh main campus since 2001, will step down as dean at the end of the academic year and assume a still-to-be-defined role at the university. He was founding director of the university’s Center for Race and Social Problems.
Richard Saller, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University since 2007, says he will step down on September 1, 2018. He plans to return to teaching there full time.

Jamienne S. Studley, deputy under secretary and acting assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education from 2013 to 2016, will become president of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (formerly known as the Western Association of Schools and Colleges’ Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities) in January. Harry Williams
Harry Williams, president of Delaware State University since 2009, has been named president and chief executive of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. He will succeed Johnny C. Taylor Jr., who led the fund for seven years.
Deaths
Howard Cinnamon, 69, a professor of music and former chair of the music department at Hofstra University, died on October 22. He had served as interim director of the university’s symphony orchestra, and organizer and conductor of its chamber orchestra.

Von Russel Eshleman, a professor emeritus of electrical engineering at Stanford University and a 1981 recipient of the NASA Scientific Achievement Medal, died on September 22 in Palo Alto. He was 93.
Richard Merrill, dean of the School of Law at the University of Virginia from 1980 to 1988, died on October 26 from Parkinson’s disease. He was 80. He served on the university’s faculty for 38 years.
Scott R. Smedley, 54, a professor of biology at Trinity College, in Connecticut, died on October 10, after a battle with cancer.
