Authorities in Yemen have failed, so far, to secure the release of a German student who was abducted in May from the Center for Arabic Language and Eastern Studies, in the capital Sanaa.
Carl Hoerencke, 25, was kidnapped near Al-Tahrir Square, a tourist spot in the city’s downtown. He was studying the culture of Yemen and teaching English at the language center, a division of the University of Science and Technology.
Mr. Hoerencke’s abductors are believed to be members of the Al Ali bin Falah tribe. The captors have offered to free Mr. Hoerencke in exchange for the release of up to six of their clansmen who were imprisoned in 1999 for kidnapping Faisal Muthanna Omar, the head of Yemen’s Supreme Court.
