Last week saw the first student protest in Oman in nearly 30 years. The subject? Food poisoning.
Riot police were called in to break up a demonstration by about 300 students from the Institute of Health Sciences. They had marched through the streets of Muscat, the capital, to protest an outbreak of food poisoning at the institution’s cafeteria.
The students carried banners condemning the institute’s catering service, which was blamed for having sickened 189 students. The students fell ill after they ate tainted chicken in the cafeteria, according to the Associated Press. Five people were hospitalized.
