Chicago, Illinois -- Despite a continued decline in the number of applications, freshman enrollment in U.S. medical schools rose in the last academic year for the first time since 1981.
Combined, the schools accepted 64 per cent of those who applied, or one in every 1.6 applicants, according to a report by the American Medical Association.
The association found a 121-per-cent increase in the number of women from the Far East and the Pacific Islands entering medical school over the past five years, and a 103.6-per-cent increase among their male counterparts.
