The 100th anniversary of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s seminal 1910 Flexner Report on medical schools has spurred a number of recent reports calling for changes in medical education. Now the foundation has released a new report updating its recommendations.
The report, “Educating Physicians: A Call for Reform of Medical School and Residency,” recommends focusing more on learning outcomes, incorporating more clinical experiences early in medical education, and offering more opportunities for medical students to train in teams with nursing and other health-care students. The report also calls for a more individualized approach to medical education and training.
