A politics professor at the University of Virginia who was accused of behaving inappropriately toward female students has reached an agreement with UVa under which he will take a paid research leave for the 2005-6 academic year.
The professor, James R. Sofka, has denied the accusations and complained that he has not had an opportunity to defend himself against anonymous and unspecified allegations of misconduct.
The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
In January the professor received a letter from his dean demoting him from a position as head of an honors program. The letter said his contract, which is set to expire in 2007, would not be renewed. While the dean did not give details of the allegations, he ordered Mr. Sofka to refrain from “touching and hugging” female students (The Chronicle, April 29).
