Kimberly Kelley of Maryland’s Montgomery College believes that leaders should do their homework. In her role as vice president and provost of the 16,000-student Rockville campus, doing her homework means she can go to meetings prepared with proposals, and can engage in constructive dialogue with everyone she meets. “Never come to a meeting with a vague idea,” Kelley advises leaders who want to hone their skills. She offers that and other tips about how to be a more effective leader in The Chronicle’s video series “What I Wish I Had Known,” our on-the-job wisdom from campus leaders.
