Transitions: Dartmouth College Selects New President; Bates College Leader to Step Down Next Year

CHIEF EXECUTIVES
Appointments
David Andrews, interim chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Global since May 2022, has been named to the post permanently.

James Annarelli, dean of students at Eckerd College, in Florida, will become interim president on August 1. He will succeed Damián J. Fernández, who announced his resignation as president on June 10.

Sian Leah Beilock, president of Barnard College, has been named president of Dartmouth College. She will be the first woman to lead the college, and will succeed Philip J. Hanlon when he steps down, in June 2023.

Mindy Benson, interim president of Southern Utah University since July 2021, has been named to the post permanently. She is the first woman to serve as president.

Mary K. Boyd, provost of Berry College, in Georgia, will become the next president of Emmanuel College, in Massachusetts, this fall. She will succeed Sister Janet Eisner, who is stepping down after 43 years.

Bill Carver, a former president of Nash Community College, has been named interim president of the North Carolina Community College system.

Torie Jackson, chief operating officer and executive vice president for institutional advancement at West Virginia University at Parkersburg, and chief executive of the university’s foundation, has been named interim president. She replaces Chris Gilmer.

Jonathan Kulaga, president of Ohio Christian University, has been named president of Indiana Wesleyan University. He will succeed David Wright, who will retire.

Ming-Tung (Mike) Lee, an emeritus professor of business administration at Sonoma State University, has been appointed interim president of the California State University campus. He will take office on August 1, following the departure of Judy Sakaki, who will step down on July 31.

Santa J. Ono, president and vice chancellor of the University of British Columbia, in Canada, has been named president of the University of Michigan. He will replace Mary Sue Coleman, who has served as interim president since Mark S. Schlissel was fired.

Lori V. Quigley, a former provost and senior vice president at Medaille University, in New York, has become interim president, replacing Kenneth Macur, who retired in June.

Vanya Quiñones, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at Pace University, in New York, has been named president of California State University-Monterey Bay.

Michelle Schutt, vice president for community and learner services at the College of Southern Idaho, has been named president of Greenfield Community College, in Massachusetts.

David A. Tandberg, senior vice president for policy research and strategic initiatives at the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, has been named interim president of Adams State University, in Colorado.

Mark L. Tykocinski, provost, executive vice president for academic affairs, and dean of the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, has been named president of the Philadelphia university.

Resignations
Marshall M. Criser III, chancellor of the State University System of Florida since 2014, will step down at the end of the year.

Sue Henderson, has resigned as president of New Jersey City University, effective July 1.

William LaForge, president since 2013 of Delta State University, in Mississippi, has stepped down.

Ronald Mason Jr., president of the University of the District of Columbia, plans to step down in June 2023.

Clayton Spencer, president since 2012 of Bates College, in Maine, plans to step down in June 2023.

Thomas A. Stith III, president of the North Carolina Community College system, is resigning his post effective July 22.

Jim Tressel, president of Youngstown State University, will step down on February 1, 2023.

Retirements
Michael B. Alexander, president of Lasell University since 2007, plans to retire in June 2023.

Earl D. Brooks II, president since 2000 of Trine University, in Indiana, plans to retire in May 2023.

Pamela Gunter-Smith, president of York College of Pennsylvania since 2013, plans to retire in June 2023.

Harvey Kesselman, president since 2015 of Stockton University, in New Jersey, plans to retire at the end of the next academic year.

Darnell Hunt, dean of the division of social sciences and a professor of sociology and African American studies at the University of California at Los Angeles, has been named the university’s executive vice chancellor and provost.

Sophia A. Maggelakis, dean of the College of Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology, in New York, has been named senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Robinson, a professor of business and co-founder of the Center for Urban Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at Rutgers University at Newark, has been named provost and executive vice chancellor.

Billie Gastic Rosado, associate dean of New York University’s School of Professional Studies, has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at LaGuardia Community College of the City University of New York.

Jeannine Diddle Uzzi, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern Maine, has been named Adler University’s first vice president for academic affairs.

Pamela Richardson Wilks, associate provost for academic operations, programs, and institutional planning, research, and effectiveness at Edward Waters University, has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Coppin State University.

Resignations
Nick Jones, executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University at University Park, will step down and return to the faculty in August.

Robert N. Garner, chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry at University of the Incarnate Word, in Texas, has been named dean of the School of Science and Engineering at Benedict College, in South Carolina.

Erick Jones, senior science adviser in the Office of the Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department and a former professor and associate dean of graduate studies in the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, has been named dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada at Reno.

John Kuriyan, a professor of chemistry and of molecular and cell biology at the University of California at Berkeley, has been named dean of the School of Medicine Basic Sciences at Vanderbilt University.

Marketa Marvanova, a professor and dean of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy at the University of Montana at Missoula, has been named dean of the School of Pharmacy at Pacific University, in Oregon.

Bistra Dilkina, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Southern California’s Viterbi School of Engineering, has been named to the inaugural Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg early-career chair in computer science.

Roxane Gay, the author and a former associate professor of English at Purdue University, has been named to the Gloria Steinem endowed chair in media, culture, and feminist studies at Rutgers University at New Brunswick.

Walter M. Kimbrough, departing president of Dillard University, in Louisiana, has been named executive in residence in the Race and Equity Center at the University of Southern California.

Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, a professor of African American studies at Princeton University, is joining the department of African American studies at Northwestern University.

DEATHS
Hobie Billingsley, who served as head coach of the diving team at Indiana University for 30 years, died on July 16. He was 95.

Robert F. Curl Jr., a professor of chemistry at Rice University who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996, died on July 3. He was 88.

Helen R. Dawson, a former dean and vice president of Villa Julie College, now known as Stevenson University, died on July 14. She was 94.

Joyce C. Lashof, the first woman to serve as dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley, died on June 4. She was 96.

George Lamming, an author who taught at at Brown University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Duke University, died on June 4. He was 94. Lamming’s work, including his first novel, In the Castle of My Skin (1953), focused on the effects of colonialism in the Caribbean.

Sylvia Molloy, a professor emerita of humanities at New York University and former president of the Modern Language Association, died on July 14. She was 83.

Judith A. Schiff, chief research archivist at the Yale University Library, died on July 11. She was 84.

Richard M. Summerville, a former provost at Christopher Newport University, died on July 3. He was 83. Summerville also taught mathematics at Christopher Newport and was chair of the department of mathematics and computer science at the institution formerly known as Armstrong State College for 10 years.

Joanne Trotter, a former dean of the School of Business and Computer Science at the institution previously known as Gwynedd-Mercy College, died on July 6. She was 78.

Paul Wilt, a professor emeritus of history at Westmont College, died on June 23. He was 93.
