Knoxville, Tennessee -- The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, at its meeting here last week, threatened to take legal action against the University of Oklahoma for its decision to drop women’s basketball.
The group, which represents high-school and college coaches, issued a statement saying that members were “appalled and angered” by Oklahoma’s decision.
Some said Oklahoma’s action might have violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which bars sex bias in education.
Oklahoma officials cited the Sooners’ poor win-loss record, a low turnout by fans, and the cost of the program, as reasons for dropping it. The women’s team won 7 of 22 games last year. University officials said the money used for basketball would go toward other women’s sports programs.
