Undergraduates at the University of California at Los Angeles will have to hunt for books in a two-story tent while the Powell Library is being renovated.
The university plans to use an exposition-style tent this fall to house its book collection while the library is made earthquake safe, said Sarah Jensen, a senior architect at UCLA.
The 40-foot-high tent will cost the university about $2- million. Smaller tents will provide office space for library workers.
Ms. Jensen said a campus-safety survey had identified the Powell Library as potentially dangerous in the event of earthquake or fire. The survey also said the library was badly in need of structural improvements.
