Note: The total number of majors for each category represents both first and second majors for bachelor’s degrees awarded in foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics over the 2016-17 academic year at four-year degree-granting public and private nonprofit colleges in the United States that are eligible to receive Title IV federal financial aid. Colleges are ranked by total number of majors. Tied institutions are listed alphabetically. Specific languages with 10 or fewer majors were not shown. The following languages had at least two but no more than 10 bachelor’s-degree recipients in 2016-17: Celtic, Danish, Dutch/Flemish, Filipino/Tagalog, Hebrew, Iranian/Persian, Modern Greek, Norwegian, Polish, and Swedish.

Also excluded were the following broad categories of studies of languages, literatures, and linguistics because they had only three to nine bachelor’s-degree recipients with those majors in 2016-17: African, American Indian/Native American, South Asian, and Southeast Asian and Australasian/Pacific. An “other” category that represented 229 majors was also excluded.

Specific languages and the broad categories of studies of languages, literatures, and linguistics are ordered by highest to lowest number of bachelor’s degrees conferred. Sixty percent of the 2,335 colleges considered for this table did not award any majors in foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics in 2016-17.

The data presented here do not capture the full extent of language study at American colleges because the 21 tables list only majors specific to particular languages or to broad categories of studies of languages, literatures, and linguistics, with the exception that such majors that are not shown separately are represented in the final “all foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics” table. The data also do not capture language study that may be part of an interdisciplinary major like Middle East studies. Only bachelor’s degrees in foreign languages, literatures, and linguistics are counted, not associate, master’s, or doctoral degrees. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.

Update (2/20/2019, 9:30 p.m.): In response to reader interest, this data presentation was expanded to include eight more tables, including separate tables for Ancient/Classical Greek and Latin, and seven tables covering broad categories of languages, literatures, and linguistics. An option to download each data table was also added.
