To the Editor:
Thanks for Tracy and Perman’s essay on The Covid Precautions Colleges Should Take This Fall (The Chronicle, April 21). It is a pertinent general review of our understanding of such precautions. However, there is a major factor that all campus must confront: managing the concentration of viral fomites in the air. That is done through the combination of lowering density of people and increasing ventilation. If density is going to be increased, then we need to significantly increase ventilation rates and establish methods to monitor ventilation. Modern buildings might have the possibility of increasing ventilation, and they should plan on doing it. The problem is with older ones. This concern pertains not only to classrooms, but also to faculty offices, conference rooms, and other facilities.
