Pell Grant eligibility has been reopened to incarcerated individuals, allowing them better access to quality education and pathways to improved prospects post-release.

Despite the challenges that come with prison education, which include a lack of awareness and limited resources, the Pell Grants allow colleges and prisons to support those behind bars in developing workplace skills and reducing recidivism.

With this policy change, about one-third of the 2.2 million currently-incarcerated population becomes eligible for financial aid, offering benefits such as improved facility safety and employment prospects.
