Alan G. Merten, who has worked to transform George Mason University from a small commuter college into the largest public university in Virginia, announced today that he would retire in 2012 after 16 years as president. Mr. Merten, who is 69, helped put the university on the map unusually quickly with a series of prominent faculty hires, a major building campaign, increasing student selectivity, and a 2006 men’s basketball team that made it to the Final Four.
