The University of Kentucky has moved to fire a tenured professor for the first time in at least half a century, saying that Buck Ryan stole university property and profited from it by requiring students to buy a book he wrote, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
David Blackwell, the provost, last week sent charges against Ryan, a journalism professor, to the Faculty Senate’s advisory committee on tenure. Among other things, the administration alleges that Ryan used university funds to print copies of his book, Writing Baby, Editing Dog, and You: A Friendly Place to Begin Your Writing, on the understanding that they would be given to students — not sold to them, as Ryan did.
