Brigham Young University’s campus police department is under investigation by Utah’s Department of Public Safety for its handling of sexual-assault reports, The Daily Herald, a central Utah newspaper, reported on Wednesday.
The investigation was requested by Larry Stott, police chief at the university, and other law-enforcement officials, and is being conducted by the Utah safety department’s State Bureau of Investigation, according to a statement released by the safety department, the newspaper said. Steven Messick, a public-information officer for the campus police, told the newspaper that the inquiry was more akin to an audit than an investigation.
BYU has recently faced scrutiny after a student said she was a victim of sexual assault and started a petition to draw attention to the alleged violence. She said she had faced disciplinary proceedings under the university’s honor code after she reported the assault. The university has acknowledged an “inherent tension” between its honor code and its Title IX responsibilities.
