Cultivating Community for Underserved Students

The pandemic has set off concerns about a lost generation of students. Early indications of falling enrollment and retention among students from lower-income backgrounds are creating a new sense of urgency. As colleges plan to reopen their campuses — and reimagine the educational experience — how can they best support and engage students from underserved populations?

To explore how to cultivate community, this event, hosted by Sara Lipka, an assistant managing editor at The Chronicle, will bring together a panel of experts and leading practitioners to answer:

  • How can colleges better promote a sense of connectedness and belonging?
  • What structures, both virtual tools and physical spaces, are most effective?
  • How can colleges keep students motivated to pursue their academic and career goals?
  • What roles can peer and faculty or staff mentors play in fostering students’ growth and progress?
