The Mental-Health Crisis on Campus

American college students are in the midst of a mental-health crisis, with suicide the second-leading cause of death among them. How can colleges prioritize suicide prevention, de-escalation, and postvention strategies?

To discuss this urgent issue, The Chronicle is assembling a panel of experts in a virtual forum to examine how colleges can respond to the increased need for mental-health support on campus, including such questions as:

  • How has the pandemic exacerbated college students’ already-growing struggles with mental health?
  • How are strained campus counseling centers meeting the demands of students with unprecedented levels of anxiety and depression?
  • What strategies can campus counseling centers employ to help prevent future tragedies?
