Race, Class, Higher Education, and Democracy

Cultivating an informed citizenry, fostering civil discourse, and encouraging the free exchange of ideas are all hallmarks of higher education. Yet today, many Americans believe the system has a negative effect on the country. In an election season unlike any other, how do colleges define their roles in promoting civic engagement and political participation? What can they do to support democracy and racial equity?

If ever there were a need for academics and college leaders to stand up and show the best of what higher education can be, the time is now. Join us for a virtual forum that will explore how educators can renew their mission to serve and advance an equitable democratic society.

The panel, co-hosted by Scott Carlson, senior writer at The Chronicle, and Michael Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College, will include:

  • Joanne Berger-Sweeney, president of Trinity College
  • William Galston, senior fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution
  • Sylvia Hurtado, professor of education and former director of the Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles
  • Peniel Joseph, professor of public affairs and history and founding director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the University of Texas at Austin
